The Kedarnath Temple, third temple in the Char Dham is located in the town of Kedarnath, which is part of the Rudraprayag district in the state of Uttarakhand, India. Specifically, it’s situated in the Garhwal Himalayas, near the headwaters of the Mandakini River. The town, built around the revered Kedarnath temple, is located at an altitude of 3,580 m, near Chorabari glacier, which is the source of the Mandakini river.

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the ancient temple has exquisite architecture and is built of extremely large but evenly shaped grey stone slabs. A conical rock formation inside the temple is worshipped as Lord Shiva in his “Sadashiva” form. The Kedarnath temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is a part of Char Dham pilgrimage circuit, and is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva in India. Behind the Kedarnath temple, stand the Kedarnath peak, Kedar Dome and other Himalayan peaks.

During the winters, the idols from Kedarnath and Madhyamaheshwar are brought to Ukhimath and worshipped there for six months. The exquisite architecture Kedarnath temple is believed to be more than 1000 years old. The temple is built from evenly cut huge grey stones evoking wonders about the ancient craftsmanship.

The doors of Baba Kedarnath were opened for public darshan on Friday 2 May 2025. With this, the Char Dham Yatra has officially commenced, allowing devotees to embark on the spiritual journey to the Himalayan shrines for the next six months. Every Year Kedarnath Temple closes for six months and six months open for all. The portals of Himalayan temple Kedarnath were opened on Friday, with more than 12,000 pilgrims attending the ceremony. The gates of the temple located at a height of more than 11,000 ft were opened at 7 am.

The doors of Baba Kedarnath Dham were opened amid grand religious ceremonies and the chanting of Vedic hymns in the presence of thousands of devotees. The auspicious moment was marked by a festive and devotional atmosphere as pilgrims gathered to witness the spiritually significant event.

The chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami was also present. Ending the six winter months’ closure, the gates of the revered temple located at a height of over 11,000 ft were opened at 7 AM. According to the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) functionaries, the shrine was adorned with 108 quintals of flowers of 54 varieties, including roses and marigolds brought from different countries like Nepal, Thailand and Sri Lanka.

It is the third temple in the Char Dham circuit to be opened with Gangotri and Yamunotri temples having opened on April 30. Badrinath portals are all set to reopen on May 4. The closing date of Kedarnath is fixed i.e 2 days after Diwali when Bhai Dooj is celebrated.

This year, Kedarnath Temple has been adorned like never before. The Pushp Samiti has decked the temple with a breathtaking 108 quintals of vibrant flowers. The colourful blooms have added an aura of divine beauty and fragrance to the already majestic shrine, leaving devotees mesmerised.

Pilgrims can register for the Kedarnath Yatra online for free, and the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee also offers online puja booking services.
