THE BACKGROUND OF SAMUNDRA MANTHAN
The Curse of Durvasa
The story begins when Sage Durvasa, known for his short temper, offered a divine garland to Indra, the king of the gods. Indra, riding his elephant Airavata, disrespectfully placed the garland on the elephant’s head. The elephant threw it to the ground. Enraged by this insult, Durvasa cursed Indra and the Devas that they would lose all their strength, prosperity, and immortality.
As a result, the Devas were weakened and started losing battles against the Asuras (demons). The cosmic balance began to shift, and the forces of darkness started prevailing over light.
The Need for Amrit (Nectar of Immortality)
The
Devas approached Lord Vishnu for a solution.
Vishnu advised that the only way to
regain strength and immortality was to obtain
Amrit (the nectar of immortality) hidden d
eep within the Kshira Sagara (Ocean of Milk). However, the task of
churning such a vast ocean was
impossible for the Devas alone. They needed the
cooperation of the Asuras.
To achieve this,
Lord Vishnu suggested a temporary truce with the Asuras. The plan was to
jointly churn the ocean and later ensure that
only the Devas would consume the Amrit.
THE FOURTEEN TREASURES (RATNAS) FROM SANUNDRA MANTHAN
As the churning continued, fourteen divine treasures, known as Ratnas, emerged from the ocean. Each of them holds great symbolic, religious, and spiritual significance.
- Kamadhenu
The wish-fulfilling divine cow, symbol of abundance and dharma.
- Airavata
The white elephant, later given to Lord Indra.
- Ucchaisravas
